Travelling on the expressway is still quite a pleasant experience especially on days when there is less traffic. The scenery is a sight for sore eyes.

Picturesque Paro airport in Bhutan

Paro airport is Bhutan's only international airport in a valley on the banks of the river called Paro Chhu. It is a doorway into Bhutan for international travelers. It is known to be most difficult commercial airport in the whole world. There is only one runway, visible at the far end of the picture, in the background below the hills.

When planes approach they have to maneuver between very high Himalayan mountain peaks, as high as 18.000 ft. The runway itself is only 1,980m in length and thus makes it even more difficult for the pilots.

Very few pilots can make this difficult approach.

From the wiki: Flights to and from Paro are allowed under visual meteorological conditions only and are restricted to daylight hours from sunrise to sunset.

Bullock Cart or Bailgadi yatra

Villagers on a pilgrimage. Their mode of travel is the bullock cart. They travel with all their belongings, spend their nights on the road. It's a long journey ahead  -to a temple. The men, women and children.

A very typical sight on Indian highways. They travel in the sweltering heat.

Painted Art on Rickshaws in Bangladesh

Rickshaw owners can be proud owners - decorating their rickshaws with pretty pictures or graphic art, most of it quite colourful. This sense of ownership and pride is more often seen on trucks, but here are a few rickshaws in the city of Dacca, in Bangladesh.

Truck Cleaners and Drivers

These are the kind of scenes - the truck drivers, the colourful trucks and the cleaners which are very typical of India. The cleaner is the truck drivers man friday and cleans the truck and also acts like his assistant in signalling overtaking vehicles or helping the driver park.

The truck cleaner here is lighting up a bidi (cigarette).

Even if the truck is white there are innovative ways to make it look fiesty and colorful. Pictures of film stars for example. And colourful cloths tied to the truck also make it more visible. Here, a little boy is the cleaner of the truck.

Airbus A380 of Singapore Airlines

The Airbus A380 is a double-decker aircraft with four-engines. The world's largest passenger airliner, so far it is deemed to be quite safe with no issues.
The airport space it occupies is quite large as can be seen from these pictures and only airports with upgraded facilities can accommodate it.

The A380's upper deck is as long as the entire length of the fuselage and the width is the same as a wide-body aircraft.

Political campaigning in India

Campaigning in elections in India is pretty hectic and these are two photographs of groups of BJP party workers campaigning in Delhi in March 2014.

Illegal number plates

In India the law is more often on paper. A simple legal requirement of correct number plates for motor vehicles is not followed. And ironically it is the law makers themselves who break the laws most often. It is as if they have a separate legal code for themselves. Clearly India is a democracy only in name. In reality we have a feudal system. Perhaps not as bad as some middle eastern and african countries, but feudal just the same. These number plates are not just to satisfy the egos of politicians but also to ensure that any other violated traffic laws are NOT easily traced back to their vehicle. These types of vehicles are more likely to break other traffic laws.

Written in fancy lettering, this number plate in Devanagari script is illegal. It should be MH04 GM201. As the little red flag reveals, this vehicle belongs to someone in a political party.

number plate wrong

This car has brazen added the words MLA to the number plate, clearly to intimidate policemen and the public.

This one is an older photograph, but it is also a politician's car.

These numbers which are supposed to be 4141 look like the word "dada" in devanagari script. Height of stupidity. Dada means don.

Cycle Repair Shops in India

Small cycle repair shops dot the Indian landscape, from small towns and cities, to villages. You will find a shop repairing cycles just about anywhere. It is the most common mode of transport in India.

Cyclist holding a tempo

A common sight in India is to see cyclists holding on to motor vehicles so that they can speed along with it. The traffic police either cannot see them or turn a blind eye. In any case even if they are caught, they are simply reprimanded. It is not considered dangerous enough. Or I suppose it is dangerous only for the cyclist, no one else. These photographs were taken through the windshield of a car.

Here the cyclist is trying to catch up with the speeding van ahead of him.

Cyclist close behind a tempo

Here he managed to do it! When we overtook we realised it was a middle aged man, oblivious to the risks associated with this mode of travel. The tempo is carrying commercial goods for sale in the marketplace. Vegetables like onions and potatoes.

Women cycling in India

In a poor country like India cycling to work is common, but it is the men who usually do it. Sure, upper class women cycle for exercise or leisure  but women's emancipation is more for the upper classes. Well-to-do Indian women do drive to work in motor vehicles but women from the poorer classes avoid taking a cycle to work, unlike their men.
Women cycling to work have been spotted in Puducherry or Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu, and Pune in Maharashtra. These photographs have all been taken in Puducherry.

This is a photograph of a girl in a pink salwar kameez cycling in a village near Puducherry.

Mumbai Pune Expressway Traffic Jam

Traffic jams on the Mumbai Pune Expressway are very common. You just never when there will be an accident, particularly in the Ghat section where the roads narrow and large vehicles occupy the right lane. Recently there was a huge jam not because of an accident but an agitation by some Hindu radicals because of facebook posts. An excuse for the unemployed goons to create a nuisance and disturb the life of ordinary and law abiding citizens.

Photographs of vehicles jam packed on the Mumbai Pune Expressway in the Western Ghats, on the way from Pune to Mumbai.
