MRT stations of Singapore

The stations where the 27 year old underground train system, called the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) are spic and span, and modern. The MRT itself spans the whole of Singapore. 2.755 million commuters ride the MRT daily (2013 statistics) and the the MRT network comprises of 152.9 kilometres (95.0 miles) of route, with 113 stations on standard gauge.

Alpine Railway

This is the train that took us to the Jung Frau summit, popularly called "Top of Europe" in Switzerland. The small train station is at the foot of the Swiss Alps and the train journey to the Jungfraujoch is through the mountains of the Eiger and Mönch. There are two viewing stations on the way from which one can get breathtaking views of the snow-covered Swiss Alps.

Railway Police in India

These are photos of policemen in India. Pictures of Indian Police.

This is a photograph of a couple of railway policemen caught on camera on duty outside VT railway station in Mumbai. The cops share a light moment with some passersby.

Matheran narrow gauge train pictures

This small narrow gauge toy train connects Neral and Matheran, a tourist resort near Mumbai and Pune. The line was open to traffic by 1907.The journey is a picturesque one over parts of the Western Ghats near Karjat and Mumbai. This railway line was financed by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy of the Adamjee Group and the consulting engineer was Everard Calthrop.

The bright red engine with the driver or helper peeping out. The train bogies are blue.

Here is the train almost reaching Matheran. Passengers can be seen at the windows.

Trams and Tramlines in Zurich Switzerland

These are pictures of trams running in Zurich, Switzerland. The network covers almost the whole city of Zurich. The first tram was introduced in 1882 and is now run by the city government. The tram system in Zurich has served as a model for other European cities.

This photograph shows the overhead electric system of the tram which has halted at a busy tram-stop in Zurich. The Paradeplatz is a famous Square in Zurich.

Inside of a metro or local train or subway

Here are photographs of the inside of a suburban train in Mumbai. The last photograph is of the inside of a metro or suburban railway in South Korea.

This is a ladies compartment in a Mumbai local train, one of the new trains. The picture was clicked with a cell phone.

This picture was taken in the men's compartment of a crowded local in Mumbai.  The photograph has been taken over the heads of people and depicts the hands clutching the steel handles. This is also one of the new trains of the suburban section.

Here is a glimpse of a Mumbai local from the outside. As is the norm, people hang out of the compartment as it is crowded, with not enough space to sit. Note how the windows are completely barricaded with steel mesh. This is to prevent people from throwing stones at commuters. Slum-dwellers who live on the tracks do it. People get injured if they are standing at the exits.

This is a subway in South Korea. It is not too crowded although people are standing. Both men and women travel in the same compartment as molestation is rare even if the trains are crowded.

London train station, platform and trains

Here are some photographs of St Pancras station in London from where the Eurostar leaves for Paris. There are pictures of trains, passengers and platforms as well.

The first picture is of a waiting area at the Pancras station. Passengers are standing around waiting for their trains.

This is a platform with a train where passengers have disembarked. They are walking with their luggage to the exit.

Here are two sleek looking red and yellow trains. A few passengers with luggage are waiting to board the train.

This is the inside of the Eurostar. Passengers can be seen inside the compartment of the train. Inside these trains it is very comfortable and spacious, and usually not crowded.

This is the worst seat you can get in the Eurostar as there is no view. Sad for  tourists as they take a train from London to Paris to do some sight-seeing on the way.

Litter and garbage on the rail tracks

Here are pictures of filthy railway tracks in India. People use the toilet at railway stations and also throw garbage outside the train window and railway platforms. Railway personnel are also guilty of this at times.

This photo is taken at Mumbai Central Station, just before the train arrived. There is slime and muck here besides litter like empty cartons and paper waste.

This pic is taken at a suburban railway station. The railway track is full of litter. Waste paper and plastic.

The following photo was posted later, and taken in July 2015, near V.T. station. It does appear as if commuters dirtying the tracks is not enough. Households next to the railway lines used the tracks as a garbage dump!

Ticket counter and queue at railway station in India

These are photographs of people in a queue to buy railway tickets and coupons for suburban trains in Mumbai. The place doesn't look very clean. The walls are unpainted and the window small and inconvenient to approach. The person at the counter is taking his time but people wait patiently for their turn. Those who already have coupons can use the coupon validating machine, which is to the left of the image.

Mumbai suburban railway station pictures

Here are a few photographs of a typical Mumbai suburban railway station interior and the "local" suburban train or metro.

The first picture gives an overview of a platform with commuters waiting for the local or metro train. On the left of the image you can see commuters climbing up the staircase to the railway bridge and to the right of the image there is the rail track.

Here is a shot of a local suburban train or metro pulling out of the station. You can see part of the platform and vendors selling food right on the edge of it. Some litter can be seen lying on the tracks

The train has now halted on the platform. This shot shows the roof of the train as well as the roof of the two platforms on either side of it.

This is a closer shot of the commuters on the staircase. It can get quite crowded when several trains arrive on the platforms at the same time.

The photo below is the bridge above the platforms. The signs in red and blue notify commuters about the platform numbers and the arriving and departing local trains. School children, college students as well as ordinary people can be seen in the picture.

Coolies from a Mumbai Railway Platform

Here are a few photograph of coolies on a Mumbai platform. The first photo shows them sitting on the staircase waiting for the train to pull in. One coolie is standing and starting straight at the camera.

The second picture shows a man negotiating a rate with a coolie. Although the rates are more or less fixed, negotiation goes on.

This third picture shows four coolies relaxing on a hand-pulled cart which they use to ferry luggage.

Zurich Railway Station

These are images of Zurich railway station. It is a very large train station. The first image is the main hall of the station. The station itself is well organised, evident from the picture and spotlessly clean. At the bottom right hand corner you can see the tables of a cafe. There is some artwork at the top right hand corner, but I cannot guess as to what it is!

Railway Crossing in India

Here is a picture of a small railway crossing in India.

Another railway crossing with a gate. Scooterists and motor cyclists are patiently waiting for the goods train to go and the gates to open.

Photo of a railway line in India

This picture is of a rail track in India.Indian Railways has more than 64,015 kilometres (39,777 mi)of track and about 7000 stations. It has the world's fourth largest railway network. Only the United States, Russia and China have a larger rail network.

VT or CST railway station in Mumbai

These are photos of VT Station in Mumbai, India. This abbreviation stands for Victoria Terminus, after Queen Victoria. The name has now been changed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, CST for short. It is a World Heritage site. This station is based on the Gothic style of architecture and was built by the British during British Rule in India. It was completed in 1887.

On a normal day it is impossible to get a clear view of CST due to the heavy traffic and the foliage.This photograph is a combination of three photos but even then the edges of the building are not visible.

The next two photographs were shot at the crossing. Despite the pedestrian subways, people still cross haphazardly on the road.

The picture below is a better composition, but the glimpse of the car at the bottom left hand corner spoils the picture somewhat. I quite liked the streetlight and the crow atop it.

The next photograph is shot from another approach road to CST, Dr. DN Road. The photo was taken through the windscreen of a car. You can see the intricate carvings and arched windows on the inside of the building.

The ugly pedestrian subway is visible in front of the station in the image below. It looks like an infected boil. What is the government thinking???

The last photo is a close-up of a part of the structure. Here too the intricate designs and carvings on the building facade can be seen.
