Nature Scenes from Switzerland

Switzerland at the end of Autumn has different colours and spectacular beauty. The mountains are mostly green and thick with fir, and the mountains are snow-capped.

A shot taken from one of the cable cars going up to see the snow clad mountains in Switzerland. The contrast in the scenes is amazing. The bluish tint of the far off mountains and the dark green of the fir trees on the mountainside in the foreground. Also the lush green grass which cattle is feeding on. The cows are brown in color.

One of my favourite photographs of the Swiss mountains. The multi-colored Alps in the background with the lush green fir trees forming the background. The trees too have different hues, like they have at the tail end of Autumn.

Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram or Mammallapuram

The Shore Temple was built over 13 centuries ago (700-728 AD). Although it is partly in ruins, it has been well maintained. It is near the beach of the Bay of Bengal. It has been made of granite at Mahabalipuram or what is also known as Mammallapuram which is a small village near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It was built during the Pallava dynasty.

A closer look at the ancient temple at Mahabalipuram. It is an UNESCO world heritage site. The temple is dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu.

Views from the Mumbai Pune Expressway Ghat section

These are some spectacular views and sunsets from the Western Ghat section of the Mumbai Pune Expressway.

This is a single image giving a panoramic view of a sunset on the mountains of the western ghat. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is in the foreground and the hills and the sun and the sky in the background.

A picture showing how crowded the Western Ghat becomes and it becomes a little risky at sundown. The road in the ghat section is narrow and vehicles always try to overtake one another. It can be quite treacherous as often larger vehicles drive on the right side blocking other motorists.

Lake scenes from Switzerland

Switzerland is a country of many lakes, some of them which are man-made and the presence of these mountain water bodies adds to the natural beauty of Switzerland. Here are photos of some breathtaking scenery around the lake, and of the mountain lakes. The photographs here are of the smaller lakes around the city of Lucerne, not of Lucerne Lake itself.

This is Lake Trub which is on the way to the Titlis mountain and can be seen clearly from the cable car. This lake seems to be dug right into the rocky surface of a mountains, on the edge of a sheer cliff. The mountains surrounding the small lake provides for beautiful scenery.

When you actually walk down to the lake you realise that it is not tiny at all. You cannot see where it ends as you stand on the edge. To the left are huge mountains, and to the right fir trees. A small boathouse is in the water.

A small water body or lake in Switzerland. It is amazing how clean, clear and blue the waters are even though humans live just a few feet away. Appears to be man-made.

Camera color reproduction poor

This is an example of how badly a digital camera can record or capture color. The camera is a Canon Ixus 115 HS, one of the better cameras in the market, but as this illustrated example shows, the colours are way off from the real ones. Lavender colored flowers look blue in the image. The camera which is taking the photograph of the hand and the flowers is a digital SLR, undoubtedly the superior camera. The flowers are actually lavender, not blue! Reproducing color is a common problem in many digital cameras.

Serene scenes from the life of rural India

The countryside can be very peaceful, capturing the way time seems to almost stop.

This scene was shot on the banks of Wai river. The hills and the river in the background and crops and cattle in the foreground. The serenity is not just in the leisurely way the cattle is grazing but there is also something about the blueness of the sky which adds to it.

In the day of motorised vehicles, there is something quite charming about a bullock cart slowly making its way up the hill. This scene was shot in the Maharashtra country-side where motor-cycles, vans, cars and buses roaring their way down the country roads are not an unfamiliar sight.

A quiet road in Goa. A well made road disappearing into the distance and a woman making her way down it. The palm and banana trees and the greenery add to the serenity of the scene.

Another man with his bullocks going home after a hard day's work.

It is amazing how simple white threads can create dramatic patterns.

Sunsets on Lake Vembanad in Kerala

The warm colors that you see in these photographs are very genuine. The sunset we saw on Lake Vembanad was colourful with oranges and yellows fading into darkness. In the foreground you can see fishing boats silhouetted against the fading sky.

Great Wall of China

Here are photographs of  the Great Wall of China. This wall was built in ancient times to protect Imperial China against invaders. It is built along the northern borders and has been built and re-built over many centuries, starting from over 2000 years ago. The actual wall is about 6,259 kms long but if trenches and natural barriers are counted, then this fortified border is 8,850 kms long. However, with all its branches is said to measure 21,196 km.
All types of materials were used to build the wall including stone, mud, wood and bricks. Some parts of the wall have been eroded or destroyed and these images were from Beijing where the all has been well preserved.
