Esna Lock Photographs

There is a lock system on the river Nile. The reason for it to make it easy for ships to navigate across a difference in height of the water.  A lock is built with a fixed chamber inside of it and in this fixed chamber the water level can be raised or lowered. It is quite an experience to go through a lock. It is like a lift for a boat or ship! However the chamber itself does not go up and down, just the water level does.
Tourists on the Nile who are traveling by a cruiser have to go through this lock. At times the waiting times can be several hours as there is a queue.

Here is a picture of the approach to the Esna Lock. In the background you can see that the water level of the river on the other side is much higher.

Entering the Esna Lock

Here is a clearer picture of the difference in water levels, seen as you enter the chamber where the water level can rise and fall. The photograph is taken from the top of the cruise liner.

Inside the Esna Lock

After the water level is raised the gates on the other side are opened.

Leaving the Esna Lock

And the boat goes through to the other side.

Venice Skyline Silhouettes

These are black and white silhouettes of Venice's Skyline - based on photographs taken at different points in the city. Venice, located in the Venetian Lagoon, is a beautiful city between the mouths of the River Po and the Piave.

This Venice silhouette represents a very famous area, a typical Venice scene with the outline of its domes and churches, with the river in the foreground. The floating buildings are on each side.

This silhouette is done in a different style from the one above and represents the same scene. It is darker, with the sky in black as well.

Li River in China

The Li or Lijiang River in Guangxi Zhuang in China winds through peculiar shaped mountains or perhaps you can call them hills, the kind you have never seen before. They are like cones or tubes or in some cases like sand dunes! The cruise along the Li River is popular with tourists. These green hills make a very picturesque sight.

Here is a small boat laden with tourists winding its way along the Li River. The green rocky cone shaped hills are in the background.

Some of the hills are like pointed cones. Trees line the narrow beach along the river Li.

Some of these rocky hills have been given different names in Chinese because of their weird shapes.

The Coronation Bridge in North-East India

Phoographs of the famous Coronation Bridge (or Sevoke Bridge or Iron Bridge) in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India on the River Teesta. It connects the two districts of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri.
It was built during the British Raj, and named the Coronation Bridge in memory of the commemoration of King George VI in 1937. The bridge was completed in 1941.
The Teesta river currents are strong, and that is why this Teesta river bridge needed the support of a fixed arch. This arch is fixed on both sides on rock layers on the sides of the river.

Taman Negara boats

These pictures are from Taman Negara, the National Park in Malaysia and a popular tourist spot. These canoes are used by tourists to navigate the well preserved Tahan river which snakes through the park.
Long canoe type boats which have a roof to protect you from the rain somewhat but offer a great view of the river.

These are panoramic views of the beautiful city of Florence in Italy. It is on the banks of the river Arno, which can be seen in the photos. Florence is famous for its art and architecture.

This image has been stitched from two single shots and give a fairly close view of the various steeples, churches, buildings and also the river and the bridge. They would make good headers for websites or blogs.

Canoes on the river Hooghly

Canoes are mostly used by poor fishermen on the river Hooghly in West Bengal, India. The Hooghly river is a distributary of the River Ganges. None of these canoes is motored. Long oars are used to move the boat along.

This is a silhouette of a long canoe on the river Hooghly in Kolkata. Two men at each end of the boat can be seen with long oars. In the background are some buildings in Kolkatta, West  Bengal. These are fishermen.

Vidyasagar Setu or the second Hoogly bridge

This image depicts the second Howrah Bridge from an angle and shows the riverside. There are boats near the riverside and on the river Hoogly as well. This bridge, like the old bridge, links the city of Howrah to its twin city of Kolkata. The bridge is a toll bridge for all vehicles. It was commissioned in 1992 and it is the longest cable-stayed bridge in India and one of the longest in Asia.

Howrah Bridge of Kolkata Photographs and Sketch

Here are some photographs of Howrah bridge or Rabindra Setu, over the river Hooghly in Kolkata.  The bridge is an icon of Kolkata and links the city of Howrah to Kolkata. It is a cantilever bridge completed in 1943, at the tail end of British Rule in India, by an English company.

In this image the Howrah Bridge can be seen from the side with the sky as the background and the Hooghly river as the foreground. A few boats/schooners can be seen under and around the bridge.

This depicts the bridge from a slight angle. A large schooner can be glimpsed to the right of the picture.

This picture was taken in the evening, and the sky looks pink. The Howrah bridge is in the centre of the image and the river Hooghly forms the foreground of the image. A small canoe can be seen on the river.

The River Nile

Here are four images of the river Nile and its large body of water. This river is considered to be the longest river in the world and flows northwards through Sudan and Egypt and ends at the Mediterranean Sea. It originates partly in equatorial East Africa and partly in Ethiopia. Most cities in Egypt are near the Nile banks, and so were all the ancient settlements.

These photographs have been shot in Egypt while on a river cruise. The first picture is a close-up of the waters of the Nile. The river is seen disappearing into the distance. It is a bright day and the glare makes the sky seem white and bright.
river nile vast expanse

This picture was shot a little later in the day and the river looks calm and serene. The waters seem to reflect the exact color of the sky. A small section of the bank of the Nile is visible to the right of the picture.
river nile and bank

This picture was also shot in the evening. The left of the image has the Nile bank. The vast expanse of the waters can be seen here.

This picture shows the river curving towards the left. I liked the composition of this picture as well as the contrast between the yellow bank on the left and the green belt to the right.

Ahmedabad and the river Sabarmati

These two photographs were shot in Ahmedabad from a hotel overlooking the river Sabarmati. One was shot in the morning, while the second image was shot in the evening.

Although Ahemedabad is not the capital of the state of Gujarat, it is one of the largest cities in India and growing fast. It lies on the banks of the river Sabarmati and was once the capital of the state. Today it is the commercial centre of the state of Gujarat, one of the richest states in India.
