Water Bearers from Kolkata

Here are photos of men carrying water in large tins which hang from a long pole on their shoulders. This is a typical way of carrying large amounts of water with less effort.

Vidyasagar Setu or the second Hoogly bridge

This image depicts the second Howrah Bridge from an angle and shows the riverside. There are boats near the riverside and on the river Hoogly as well. This bridge, like the old bridge, links the city of Howrah to its twin city of Kolkata. The bridge is a toll bridge for all vehicles. It was commissioned in 1992 and it is the longest cable-stayed bridge in India and one of the longest in Asia.

Howrah Bridge of Kolkata Photographs and Sketch

Here are some photographs of Howrah bridge or Rabindra Setu, over the river Hooghly in Kolkata.  The bridge is an icon of Kolkata and links the city of Howrah to Kolkata. It is a cantilever bridge completed in 1943, at the tail end of British Rule in India, by an English company.

In this image the Howrah Bridge can be seen from the side with the sky as the background and the Hooghly river as the foreground. A few boats/schooners can be seen under and around the bridge.

This depicts the bridge from a slight angle. A large schooner can be glimpsed to the right of the picture.

This picture was taken in the evening, and the sky looks pink. The Howrah bridge is in the centre of the image and the river Hooghly forms the foreground of the image. A small canoe can be seen on the river.

Cycle Rickshaws in India

These are photographs of cycle rickshaws, two from Kolkata in West Bengal, one from North India and one in Pondicherry or Puducherry in Tamil Nadu.

In this photograph you can see a woman passenger riding in the cycle rickshaw on a Kolkata road.

This is another cycle rickshaw in Kolkatta. These rickshaws are ideal to navigate narrow lanes in Kolkata.

This one is shot in Uttar Pradesh. Although the picture is of a fairly low resolution and for web use only, this picture is interesting as it has the rickshaw driver putting money in his pocket.

The poverty of Indian rickshaw drivers is noticeable. However this cycle rickshaw driver in Puducherry seemed relatively well-off. His cycle rickshaw looked freshly painted and the driver was having a nap even though it was the middle of the day.
