Cycle carts with three wheels

Cycle carts to carry goods are used frequently in towns and cities of India. These three-wheeled carts have a cycle attached which makes it easy to maintain and inexpensive to run. They have a small load carrying capacity. However these vehicles are used in fairly innovative ways as the first picture demonstrates.

This man is smoking a bidi as he rides his cycle cart on a cold morning near Jaipur, in Rajasthan. Believe it or not this small cyclecart is carrying long flexible pipes which are potruding for several feet, if not meters, outside his vehicle. This would be considered a dangerous vehicle on the roads of any developed country but for India, this is common. The traffic police would not bother to penalize this driver who is trying to earn a living.

This is a smaller cycle cart which is being used to a large wicker basket full of vegetables. Some vegetable vendors carry this on their heads and a lucky few have a vehicle to cart it around in. This photograph was shot in Kolkata.

Cloth and Textile Market in Ahmedabad old city

These are photographs of the famous cloth and textile market of Ahmedabad where you get cottons, dress material, linen or sarees at reasonable prices. The rates are low as many wholesalers and cloth merchants operate from here. Embroidery work is also available. The sights are quite colourful due to the wide variety of typical Gujarati cottons available here. Many small businesses pick up their material from here.

This is a small lane which winds it way through this old city market in Ahmedabad. Easy to get lost here. A worker at one of the stores is carrying bales of cloth on his shoulders to another storage place or perhaps another shop.

A salesman is folding the material after customers have left the shop. He has a lot of work to do as reams of dress material is lying on the floor, and some has spilled on to the road.

Here is another cloth merchant in his shop, folding dress material. The shop also sells sarees which are hanging on hangers to the right of the image. Some duppattas decorate the right side of the shop.

Mumbai Ahmedabad Highway scenes

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway is part of National Highway No. 8 in India. It is part of the Golden Quadrilateral project and the highway is wide and well-made road. However it is accident-prone.

These are some shots of the scenic road and the pretty country-side along the way from Mumbai to Ahmedabad.

Wooden hand carts with four wheels - Photos and Sketches

Four-wheeled handcarts are common across India and used for a variety or purposes. For transporting goods to selling wares. Here are a few photographs of these hand-carts.

The first picture is of a hand cart selling coloured drinks, most of which use banned colours. The vendor doesn't seem to be around. To the left of the picture is a cobbler. An umbrella protects him from the heat of the sun. The picture was taken on a hot summer's day in Pune and the photo is a little over-exposed.

Another photo of a hand-cart selling drinks on a hot day. These people appear as if they are in the middle of nowhere, but actually they are near the highway on the outskirts of Pune. You will see lemons displayed on the cart, and this is used to add taste to the synthetic drinks. These drinks are cheap, and it is mostly the poor who buy them. You can see a small boy purchasing a cool drink. This cart also has a matka or an earthern pot which cools the water. No need for refrigeration here!

The photo below is of three hand-carts spotted from a hotel window in Ahmedabad city. It's a bird's eye view of hand-carts and men pushing them.

This is a photo of an overturned hand-cart. It is on its side, with the wheels visible. It's been deliberately overturned so that it occupies less space on the road.

The next two photos are not of a high resolution and should be used only in the size shown in the post. The one directly below is of a young man pushing an empty hand-cart in Ahmedabad.

Mahatma Gandhi quotes

These are photographs of some quotes and sayings of Mahatma Gandhi which have been framed and kept in Gandhidham, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi in Ahmedabad.

The first two quotes demonstrate the broad-minded thinking of Mahatma Gandhi and his understanding of human nature. This wise quotation says
This world is inhabited by all kinds of people. They are isolated by land and water, religion, customs, habits. The minds and hearts of these people are much alike. Under sudden or stressed emotions, they blossom forth or explode in riots, fights, dance, song, prayer. At such times they become one mind, one heart. And the world vibrates with the intensity of their feelings, emotions, anger, laughter.

Gandhi quote image

It is not surprising that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi help fight apartheid in South Africa. He loved all humanity and that is clear in this wise saying:
I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.
Gandhi quote photo

The quote below shows us his belief in true democracy and his cynicism about western democracy. If he were alive today he would have something bitter to say about the state of Indian democracy as today Indian democracy is not functioning as Gandhi envisioned:
My notion of democracy is that under it the weakest should have the same opportunity as the strongest...No country in the world today shows any but patronising regard for the weak....Western democracy as it functions today, is diluted fascism...True democracy cannot be worked by twenty men sitting at the centre. It has to be worked from below by the people of the village.

gandhi quote on democracy

The saying of Mahatma Gandhi's wife Kasturba aptly shows the thinking and position of women in the early twentieth century. Even though women had a lower status than men it is interesting what they actually thought of the men.
Our men are fighting the government for the sake of truth. We must encourage them in this fight. We must bear bravely whatever harassment the government may subject us to...The boycott of alcohol and foreign clothes is a task that women have to do. Men are not blessed with the kind of common sense that we have for  we understand the language of sorrow better than men.
kasturba gandhi quote

Ahmedabad and the river Sabarmati

These two photographs were shot in Ahmedabad from a hotel overlooking the river Sabarmati. One was shot in the morning, while the second image was shot in the evening.

Although Ahemedabad is not the capital of the state of Gujarat, it is one of the largest cities in India and growing fast. It lies on the banks of the river Sabarmati and was once the capital of the state. Today it is the commercial centre of the state of Gujarat, one of the richest states in India.
