Anna Hazare's arrest drama in pictures

These are screenshots of television news channels during the farcical arrest of social activist Anna Hazare in New Delhi yesterday. These images are from English and Hindi news channels.
Anna's arrest created a media frenzy, evident in these scenes captured from different television channels.

This is an image from the English channel Times Now. Anna Hazare Arrested the channel screams.

Live India, a Hindi channel has a dramatic picture of Anna Hazare staring defiantly from  behind bars.

People protest all over India. Headlines Today, an English channel showed this image of people protesting in different places. Most channels showed clips from other places besides Delhi.

Within hours the government seems to have panicked. First some of Anna's associates who were arrested (eg. Kiran Bedi) are released. Then there is news that Anna Hazare is being released. This is an image from CNN-IBN and it tells us that the police have sent a release warrant to Tihar Jail where Anna is lodged.
Anna Hazare's release from Jail announced

All news channels are reporting it now. This image is from the Hindi channel Total Live. Anna Hazare is to be released but negotiations are on. The government of India is not showing any signs of sense, sensibility or leadership by these tactics. One wonders if Rahul Gandhi is in the lead. Or is it Chidambaram? Surely it cannot be Manmohan Singh? Just curious to know whose strategy this is...or wait maybe they have all put their heads together!

Huts in an Indian Village

Indian Villages are not all about being mired in poverty where people cannot eke out a living. The following pictures are of a village about 200 kilometers north-east of Mumbai (near Diwekarwadi) where the houses and surrounding areas are clean, the roofs of the huts are cobbled and there is satellite television as well. Sure, these people are poor, but they are not desperately poor. And they certainly live better lives than the urban poor.

A photograph of a cobbled hut in a village. You can see the wide entrance and porch, a design good for the summer heat. The hut is built under a large shady tree. In India the evenings are cooler but the houses may have heated up. Sitting in the shade under a porch is something that people do. A small satellite dish is visible in the right of the picture, on the roof.

The satellite dish is visible in the center of the photograph. These people are not so poor that they cannot affort satellite television.

Television channel photos - Aaj Tak, CNN IBN, Times Now, Headlines Today and IBN

These are images of the various television NEWS channels in India, English and Hindi. Bloggers are very fond of critiquing news channels and these images are just right for them.

Aaj Tak, a Hindi channel, comes in for a lot of flak because of its sensational news reporting.

aajtak TV channel

In my view CNN IBN is a fairly good English news channel, more balanced than the others.
CNN IBN TV channel

HeadLines today belongs to the India Today group, like Aaj Tak. Its in English and also tends towards sensational reporting although I find it better than Aaj Tak. There is a lot of entertainment related news here. This image is a grab from the Sports News.

Headlines Today TV channel

I do not watch IBN, a Hindi channel so cannot say much here.

IBN Hindi TV channel

Times Now is known for its sensational reporting and its habit of making mountains out of molehills. Political gossip is its forte. However they do a fair amount of good reportage, evident in their latest attempts to uncover corruption scams in India.
