Chanachur from Bengal or Bombay mix or simply a mixture

Street food differs from region to region and country to country, but there is some similarity in the different snacky mixtures available on the streets of India. It is a various of puffed rice, chola (cooked beans of different types depending on the region), maybe boondi, finely chopped tomatoes, onion, coriander and most important - spices! Most of the snacks are sweet and sour and a bit hot to taste.

This vendor selling the mixture is from Bengal.

This street snack from Gujarat comprises of various spices and condiments and also a chivda or papdi mixture.

The tomato sauce, green chillies and onion can add a lot of taste to the chivda flakes which are probably made of gram flour or besan.

Here on a Puducherry beach there is some mixture which is mixed with grated raw mango and peanuts to make a tasty snack. And of course red chilly powder and other spices are used to make it tasty.

Pani Puri or Gol Gappa or phuchka vendors

It is known as Pani Puri in Western India, Phuchka in Eastern India and Gol Gappa in the North. And it's one of the most popular snacks. Small round deep fried puris stuffed with a mixture of mashed vegetables and chick peas, it is dipped in flavoured watery syrup which tastes sweet and sour and then popped whole into the mouth!

It is available in every corner of India, although it not so much in Southern India. Here is a man at a popular tourist spot with his ready-made puris, waiting for customers.

Inside the Bombay High Court

These are images from inside the High Court of Bombay. Courtrooms are spacious, air-conditioned and seats are comfortable. The rooms have high ceilings as this is a heritage building built in the British era.
The name of the city of Bombay may have changed to Mumbai, but the High Court is still called the Bombay High Court.

In this first image you can see some lawyers sitting on the chairs. The judge is studying some papers on his desk. Courtroom clerks can be seen in the picture.

Windshield Wiper boys

These are windshield wiper men or boys, or call them car window washers or squeegee men. They have surfaced in the last few years at petrol pumps or gas stations in India. It is a free service. They don't charge you but if you tip them they won't refuse. This free service is being provided at some petrol pumps. Luckily they don't bother you at traffic signals like in some other countries. I guess in India it won't work - people will get their windshield cleaned but refuse to pay!

Healthy snacks

These pictures are from a popular tourist spot - Mahabaleshwar. Tourists throng here to see the sights at the hill station and they also get treated to a lot of snacky food - but snacks like bowls of fresh fruits and vegetables and fresh juice and buttermilk! Not processed food. No sugar laden chemical laden soft drinks and no sandwiches or burgers. Lots of berries, fruits, corn cobs, carrots and lemon juice and butter milk!

These are not markets...but snack joints. Lets hope they stay this way.

Istriwala or Istrivala

Whether you want to call him your next door istrivala (istriwala) or a manual laundromat, these are a typical sight in every corner of India. These guys have a home delivery service, picking up and dropping off your clothes but their expertise is questionable and there are no guarantees that your clothes will return in the shape you gave them. Ironing clothes for ₹ 3/- to ₹ 5/- each. Some have irons operating on coal like the one in the pictures and others could do the work in tiny hovels with electricity. There is also the issue of hygiene. At times the clothes can return with bed bugs or other insects and also stains which never come off.

However more often than not your clothes return just fine, specially if you have a reliable istrivala. So choose well!

These are hand-pulled rickshaws found in various parts of the country even now.

Pesticide Spraying

Pesticide spraying if properly regulated and judiciously used helps crops improve their yield. Pesticides are designed to kill insects, fungus, bacteria and other pests which prey on crops. Unfortunately, the chemical pesticides are toxic chemicals which can affect human health, more so if improperly administered.

Pesticides residue on farming produce is harmful to consumers. Pesticides are also carried in the air, and they mix with water and the soil, which in turn affects livestock and drinking water supplies. It also affects those who actually carry out the work of spraying.

Look at this man, he is not wearing any protective gear while spraying pesticide on the crops. It is likely that he is unaware of the dangers. The toxic chemicals can enter the human body through the skin, eyes, mouth and nose.

The danger from pesticide use is widespread, specially in countries like India where there is greater illiteracy. Farmers often cannot understand the instructions given on the label.

Plucking coconuts

They climb trees faster than you can blink and bring down a volley of coconuts, with nothing but a sickle in their hands and some rope tied to their feet.

Here is a man smiling at the bottom of the coconut tree. Some of the coconuts with their thick green covering are lying on the ground. He has already plucked them from other trees. Quite a good catch!
