Fratelli Vineyards

Fratelli Vineyards, a 3- hour drive from Pune have acres and acres of vineyards. Visiting during the harvest season means that you see vines laden with grapes. 

The accommodation is clean and spacious though not 5-star. 

Besides the normal wine tasting, you can wander around the beautiful vineyards, walk or bike and experience lovely sunset. Food served is simple but tasty. Very affordable at 6500/- for a day/night with all 3 meals included.

Tea Gardens in Kerala

Pesticide Spraying

Pesticide spraying if properly regulated and judiciously used helps crops improve their yield. Pesticides are designed to kill insects, fungus, bacteria and other pests which prey on crops. Unfortunately, the chemical pesticides are toxic chemicals which can affect human health, more so if improperly administered.

Pesticides residue on farming produce is harmful to consumers. Pesticides are also carried in the air, and they mix with water and the soil, which in turn affects livestock and drinking water supplies. It also affects those who actually carry out the work of spraying.

Look at this man, he is not wearing any protective gear while spraying pesticide on the crops. It is likely that he is unaware of the dangers.The toxic chemicals can enter the human body through the skin, eyes, mouth and nose.

The danger from pesticide use is widespread, specially in countries like India where there is greater illiteracy. Farmers often cannot understand the instructions given on the label.

Bulls photographs

Bulls are the male version of the cow! An integral part of farming activity. With their horns they are quite majestic creatures, and in fact play a significant role in the religious rituals of religions like Hinduism. Statues of bulls are often found at the entrance of temples as they are believed to be gatekeepers.
In these photos you can see two bulls resting on the side of a small country road at a farm. The horns of the bulls are painted. This is quite common in India.

Rubber Plantations in Kerala

Kerala is a lush green land and the home to several cash crops like coconut, tea, rubber, coffee and spices. These are pictures of the picturesque rubber plantations. These were first planted here by the Dutch as Rubber is not native to India. These tall slim trees are now a major revenue earner for the state of Kerala, India.

Plastic pouches are on the trees to collect the sticky white latex, the milk of rubber. Processing yields natural rubber. Rubber trees are tall with straight trunks and smooth green leaves.

Palm Plantations of Malaysia

Malaysia the second largest producer of palm oil in the world and the world's second largest exporter of palm oil. More than 60 percent of the palm oil is exported. The Malaysian economy is heavily dependent on the palm oil production. 

These photos were shot through the double glass window of an airplane.

Here you can see how widespread the palm plantations are. Almost every available land space is taken up by the palm trees.

The palm plantations are everywhere, stretching from end to end.

Rice fields near Chennai

The East Coast Road (ECR) connecting Chennai to Cuddalore goes via Puducherry and these pictures were taken along the way. Some parts of the highway has dry vegetation, or palms and beaches where it runs next to the coast and some part of the land has lush green rice fields like those seen in these photographs.

Rice needs a lot of water and you can see that the crop has been flooded with water. In the background there are palm trees.

Hay stacks in Rural India

Different types of grass is dried, and stored and is used as animal fodder for livestock like cattle, horses, goats, and sheep eat hay. Rabbits and guinea pigs or pigs also munch hay.

These are photographs of haystacks in rural India. Both men and women work on cutting the grassy vegetation, drying it in the sun and then storing in heaps. Later it is packed is made into compact hay bales with the use of machines.

Large images of open fields for headers

These are panoramic views farms and fields in India. In the first image (combination of of three photographs) you can see a wide open field with a small tree and some hills in the distance. The field has just been cultivated and made ready for a new crop. The right of the image you can see the white bright light from the rays of the setting sun.
