Banana Chip Making Machine in Kerala

This is a locally made machine which slices bananas and drops them directly into the hot oil. A peeled banana is pushed into a hole and comes out sliced on a tray. They fall into boiling hot smoking oil where the banana chips are fried.

Fruit Vendors vs supermarkets

This is how easy it is for consumers to access produce. Simply walk out of their building and usually they will find some vendor selling fruits or vegetables. They need to do it, as most Indians are poor and do not own personal transport. Or if they do, the expense of gas or petrol pinches their pocket. And these fruit vendors are willing to bargain but there is a catch. If you do not know the current prices you can be taken for a ride. In fact alighting from a car guarantees that the prices will be jacked up.

Here are two women in South India chatting with each other as they sell fresh apples, bananas, tangerines and grapes.  This picture was taken in Madurai.

All types of fruits can be found on the streets in India, just a short walk away. This includes even produce such as sugarcane which many Indians love to eat raw.  Here is a woman on a Thane's Gokhale Road selling bananas and sugarcane sticks.

These fruit vendors line up on the highway to catch customers leaving town. Usually the produce is fresher than what one can get in city markets. These fruits are not cheap, but they are good.

Jackfruit or Phanas Photographs

Photographs of Jackfruit and also some close-ups of the fruit which is known as phanas in India. The fruit is the largest tree-borne fruit and can weigh as much as 35 kilograms. It has a strong smell but there are parts of India, particularly the south and coastal areas where it is popular. Inside it is orange/yellow in colour. Outside it has a spiky green exterior. Besides the fibre and vitamin C content like all fruits, jackfruits are also rich in B-Complex vitamins.

Bananas - free stock photos and sketch

Here are some high resolution large images of bananas. The first picture is a close-up, and the frame has just bananas. At the bottom of the pile there are some green, unripe ones.

This is a photo of bananas from another angle, another close-up. The background is the street and the foreground consists of bananas piled up on a hand-cart. These bananas look a little over-ripe.

Bora (Berry) - the red tropical sweet berry

These are photographs of the Bora (Berry) which are called Chanya Manya Bora in Marathi. It is a popular berry in Maharashtra, India and can range from red to brown to yellow in colour. It is also referred to as Bor, Spiny jujube, wild jujube and Sheizaf.
These photographs were taken on a cell phone and are thus not of a very high resolution. They are fine for web use though.

The background was rather cluttered so I decided to make a cutout of the berries. The white stuff on them is salt.

In this next photo I placed the berries on a dried leafy background. It matched with the bowl in which these berries came in. They are commonly served on such a leaf bowl in the rural areas.

I was rather taken aback at this information which told me that a foreigner found these berries sour and disgusting and categorised them as a "bizzare" food. There are many unknown and unfamiliar foods and and has to develop a taste for them. I have called some foods disgusting (a roasted cockroach!) but never would apply the term to a berry.
I grew up munching these berries. They are yummy!

Photos of Mangoes

Here are some close-up pictures of Mangoes, some of them packed in boxes. Mangoes are a tropical fruit popular in India. There are many different varieties. It is a seasonal fruit, mainly available for a couple of months in the height of summer, from April onwards till the monsoons set in.

The first photograph is of Alphonso mangoes packed in boxes and being sold in a shop in Pune. The Alphonso mango is native to the state of Maharashtra in India and is considered the best variety. It is the most expensive amongst all the other varieties of mangoes.

Here is a close-up photos of mangoes. These Alphonso mangoes are of good quality although not large and are packed in a box.

Fruits - Mangoes, Bananas, Apples, Peaches, Papayas, Plums and Custard Apples

These are photographs of fruits at a market/shop in India. Fresh fruits are available in plenty in India. However they are often out of reach of the common man particularly fruit like Peaches, custard apples, pomegranates and plums. Raw Mangoes are used in cooking. Bananas and Guavas are the common man's fruit.

The next photo is of alphonso mangoes being sold in a shop in Pune. Mangoes are a favourite with Indians. The Alphonso mango (shown in the picture) is loved by people in Maharashtra. At one time Mangoes used to be available at reasonable prices but due to the popularity of the Alphonso Mango in foreign countries, the domestic prices have risen. The fruit is exported to many countries in Europe and the Middle East. Every year the price of Alphonso increases, with one mango often being sold for as high as Rs 50- 100 for a good quality mango.

This last picture is of different varieties of mangoes displayed in a supermarket in the vegetable and fruit section. After April and May the season for Alphonso is more or less over and other varieties come in its place. The mangoes at the end of the pile, towards the middle of the picture, the long ones, are Dasheri mangoes, a fairly good variety of mango grown in the North of India.
