Hand Pulled Rickshaw Drivers Portraits

Business is not always good in Matheran, especially during the off season. Here are photographs of rickshaw drivers waiting for fares. Motorized vehicles are not allowed in the hill station of Matheran in Maharashtra, India. These men pull these rickshaws with their bare hands.
These are hand-pulled rickshaws found in various parts of the country even now.

Bored but alert.

Matheran narrow gauge train pictures

This small narrow gauge toy train connects Neral and Matheran, a tourist resort near Mumbai and Pune. The line was open to traffic by 1907.The journey is a picturesque one over parts of the Western Ghats near Karjat and Mumbai. This railway line was financed by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy of the Adamjee Group and the consulting engineer was Everard Calthrop.

The bright red engine with the driver or helper peeping out. The train bogies are blue.

Adventure Sports - Valley crossing and wall climbing

Some photographs of people crossing a small valley using thick ropes and gear in Matheran, India. This man is smiling as he crosses a small valley with the blue sky as the background. You don't need any training before you do this!

This is a sport which mimics rock climbing and is an activity at most of the adventure resorts. The person is tied with a rope harness and has to climb a sheer vertical wall only by using small metal protrusions. It's quite difficult as one has to pull one's whole weight upwards. This photo was taken at Durshet, a small resort between Mumbai and Pune.

Nature scenes of hills, valleys and trees

Here are some breathtaking panoramic views from Matheran, a hill station in Maharashtra, India. They are images stitched from 2-3 photos and show deep valleys, rolling hills, trees and bushes.

In the first image there is a tree in the foreground (to the right of the picture), and a range of hills stretching far out into the distance.

The second image shows some bushes in the foreground and the deep valley and hills in the background. It is the same scene from another angle, without the tree.

In this image the tree is to the left of the panoramic scene. The red mud of Matheran in the foreground makes a nice contrast to the green of the valley and the blue of the hills beyond.

The photograph below shows just the hills of Matheran.

The hillocks seen in this image were shot on the way to Matheran. They make an interesting scene, showing the plains beyond. The foreground is a bunch of trees and bushes.

This last photograph below is one of my favorites. The silhouetted mountain range against a setting sun adds an element of character, mystery and intrigue to the mountains. The contrast between two mountain ranges is clearly visible, the one in the foreground almost black and the one in the background a little blue. A third mountain can be seen beyond this one, grayish in colour. The setting sun sheds its glow on the mountain range, giving the picture it's unique lighting.

Hand-Pulled Rickshaws

The first two are photographs of  hand-pulled rickshaws in Kolkata, India. In the first picture, the  background is a busy market-place. The rickshaw puller (in a lungi) has parked his vehicle on the side of the road and can be seen behind his vehicle.

This image is also taken with the backdrop of a busy marketplace in Kolkata, India. The hand rickshaw puller is taking a break on his rickshaw. Coconuts for sale can be seen in the background.

This is the same photo as shown above but colour corrected.

These are pictures of hand-pulled rickshaws on the hill-station of Matheran in Maharashtra, India. You will find that they are better maintained than the ones in Kolkata because the Matheran rickshaws only carry tourists and they charge high fares. The kolkata hand pulled rickshaws are pulled by labourers charging nominal fares and are a fairly common transport system for the city.

The first picture is of a man pulling an empty rickshaw. There is another rickshaw-puller behind him.

This shows a hand-pulled rickshaw resting on the side of the road near the railway line, waiting for a passenger.

In the photo below you will see a couple of rickshaw pullers chatting, their rickshaws alongside.

Hand Rickshaw pullers

The picture below is of the hand pulled rickshaws with their pullers. You will find several men manning a rickshaw, often as many as three. This is because Matheran is a hilly town and one person cannot pull a loaded rickshaw on his own.

Hand Pulled Rickshaw drivers

This is an example of three rickshaw pullers pulling one rickshaw. One is pulling it from the front, and two others are pushing it from the back. Perhaps these should be called hand-pushed rickshaws!

Scenes from the Matheran Mountains or Ghat

BRXT7YZS7W5N
These photographs are of the Matheran mountain pass, called the Matheran Ghat in India. The word "Ghat" has been absorbed into English and one of its English meanings is mountain pass. It means the same in Indian languages like Marathi.

The Matheran Ghat is steep and picturesque and leads to the hill station of Matheran located between Pune and Mumbai.
