Li River in China

The Li or Lijiang River in Guangxi Zhuang in China winds through peculiar shaped mountains or perhaps you can call them hills, the kind you have never seen before. They are like cones or tubes or in some cases like sand dunes! The cruise along the Li River is popular with tourists. These green hills make a very picturesque sight.

Some of the hills are like pointed cones. Trees line the narrow beach along the river Li.

Some of these rocky hills have been given different names in Chinese because of their weird shapes.

Photos of the mountains of Ladakh

These are photographs of the mountains in Ladakh, which is a region in Jammu and Kashmir, the northernmost state in India. This region has the Kunlun mountain range to its north and the Himalayas to the south of it. Large tracts of Ladakh are a high-altitude desert  but there is vegetation near its lakes and areas where it snows and ofcourse man-made vegetation. 

You can see a road snaking its way across the blue mountains.

A closer look at the slopes of Ladakh. The sparse vegetation on the mountains makes their surface rocky and hard. There is hardly any grass or water nearby.

Scenes from the Matheran Mountains or Ghat

These photographs are of the Matheran mountain pass, called the Matheran Ghat in India. The word "Ghat" has been absorbed into English and one of its English meanings is mountain pass. It means the same in Indian languages like Marathi.

The Matheran Ghat is steep and picturesque and leads to the hill station of Matheran located between Pune and Mumbai.

This last photograph was shot through the windscreen of the car. Here you can see the black volcanic rocks typical of the Deccan region in Maharashtra.

Photos taken from Jungfrau, a summit in the Swiss Alps

These panoramic views and photographs of the Swiss Alps were taken during a trip to Switzerland in September 2009. They were shot on the way from Interlaken to a summit called Jungfrau, and some where taken from Jungfrau which is the third highest mountain of the Bernese Alps in Switzerland. The place is also popularly known as "Top of Europe." Some of these pictures would make good headers, particularly the last two which are stitched from more than one photo.

The view from this summit is breathtaking. It is one of the most frequented tourist places now and is a World Heritage site. In the photograph below you can see the endlessness of the alps in the distance and a few snow-covered mountain tops.

This second photograph was clicked while on the way to the Jungfrau summit by train. There was a stop and a viewing gallery. The picture was taken through glass and several images were stitched into one to give a panoramic view from the gallery of the icy summits of the swiss alps.

The photo below is of a part of the Swiss Alps without any snow. The photo was shot in September, when there is less snow.
