Nature Scenes from Switzerland

Switzerland at the end of Autumn has different colours and spectacular beauty. The mountains are mostly green and thick with fir, and the mountains are snow-capped.

A shot taken from one of the cable cars going up to see the snow clad mountains in Switzerland. The contrast in the scenes is amazing. The bluish tint of the far off mountains and the dark green of the fir trees on the mountainside in the foreground. Also the lush green grass which cattle is feeding on. The cows are brown in color.

One of my favourite photographs of the Swiss mountains. The multi-colored Alps in the background with the lush green fir trees forming the background. The trees too have different hues, like they have at the tail end of Autumn.

Alpine Railway

This is the train that took us to the Jung Frau summit, popularly called "Top of Europe" in Switzerland. The small train station is at the foot of the Swiss Alps and the train journey to the Jungfraujoch is through the mountains of the Eiger and Mönch. There are two viewing stations on the way from which one can get breathtaking views of the snow-covered Swiss Alps.

Lake scenes from Switzerland

Switzerland is a country of many lakes, some of them which are man-made and the presence of these mountain water bodies adds to the natural beauty of Switzerland. Here are photos of some breathtaking scenery around the lake, and of the mountain lakes. The photographs here are of the smaller lakes around the city of Lucerne, not of Lucerne Lake itself.

This is Lake Trub which is on the way to the Titlis mountain and can be seen clearly from the cable car. This lake seems to be dug right into the rocky surface of a mountains, on the edge of a sheer cliff. The mountains surrounding the small lake provides for beautiful scenery.

When you actually walk down to the lake you realise that it is not tiny at all. You cannot see where it ends as you stand on the edge. To the left are huge mountains, and to the right fir trees. A small boathouse is in the water.

Melting Glaciers

There comes a time of the year when the snow starts to melt on the Swiss Alps and these are some photographs of the mountains with the melting snow. What is significant is that the glaciers retreating and thinning. These environmental changes which will impact the climate of the world have taken place over hundreds of years and could create flooding too. More and more of the mountains lie exposed today and earlier in the season.

As it says here on the Swiss government site:
Between 1850 and 1970 alpine glaciers lost at least one third of their surface area and about half their density.
A thin layer of ice and snow covers a steep slope of a Swiss mountain. Tourists walk along a narrow and slippery path in the middle of the mountain.

Cattle grazing in the countryside

These are photographs of cattle in a pristine countryside. In the first picture you can see a single cow sitting peacefully in the middle of a green field, a scenic place near Lucerne, in Switzerland. In the background you can see the Alps. Small houses dot the green and peaceful countryside.

This picture is of the English countryside. The white cows with black dots are grazing in a field next to the highway in Wales, Great Britain.

This image is quite spectacular because the black and white cattle is almost merging with the background of gray gravel. This photo was taken in Leh Ladakh. One can only wonder at the tiny bits of vegetation the cattle has to forge on! Tiny figures of humans can be seen on either side of the cattle on this gravely mountainside.

Lake Lucerne Photos

Lake Lucerne is in the city of Lucerne, in central Switzerland. You can go around the lake by road, although the road is narrow at times, and through tunnels. This lake is used frequently by steamers which go from ply between the different towns on the lake. It is a popular tourist destination.
Here is a view of Lake Lucerne from the pier. The blue sky and hills in the background and the hills dotted with buildings.

Trams and Tramlines in Zurich Switzerland

These are pictures of trams running in Zurich, Switzerland. The network covers almost the whole city of Zurich. The first tram was introduced in 1882 and is now run by the city government. The tram system in Zurich has served as a model for other European cities.

Zurich city - bridges, river, people and buildings

These are photographs of Zurich city, the largest city in Switzerland and the financial center.

The photograph below offers a wide view of some of the major buildings near the Limmat river. The Grossmünster church can be seen to the right of the image. It has two spires and a red steeple at the back. To the left of the image are two clock towers. The shorter one is the largest church clock face in Europe. It belongs to St. Peter's church, an old church built in the 8th or 9th century. The green steeple belongs to the Fraumünster church, another major church in Zurich.

The next two photos are closer views of the same area. You can see boats parked and covered with blue tarpaulin on the river Limmat. There is a small boathouse next to them.

This photo is of a bridge across the Limmat river in Zurich. Most major sights are located near the river. Churches and bridges and shops.

This is the entrance to the Frauminister church. In the background you can see the residential buildings, nor more than 4-5 stories high. Most buildings in Zurich are short, part of the city planning. They are also fairly close to one another.

People smoking in China, Switzerland, France and India

These are photos of men smoking, young and old.

The first one is of a young man in China. He is standing at a shopping centre or mall, and enjoying his smoke. He seems to be concerned with style, the way he is holding his cigarette between his teeth. China has 300 million smokers and the latest news is that China is planning to ban public smoking at indoor public places, similar to this one.

This one is of an elderly man on a bridge in Zurich, Switzerland. He is lighting his cigarette. This photograph was taken in October 2009, seven months  before the ban on smoking in public places took effect in Switzerland.

This photo is of a man smoking in the city of Paris. He sure seems to be addicted, because he cannot stop himself even as he is packing something on his scooter.

Here is an image of an Indian man on a horse smoking beedi or bidi, in Matheran, India. A beedi is a thin cigarette. Tobacco is wrapped in a leaf, and it is cheap and commonly smoked in India. It delivers more poisonous substances than other types of cigarettes.

Ice Palace Switzerland

One of the sights to see at Jungfrau, Top of Europe, is the Ice Palace. Here are a few pictures of the very slippery place! Jungfrau is a tourist destination and one of the highest points in the Swiss Alps. It is a popular tourist destination, and need not be a luxury vacation! A fair amount of inexpensive holiday packages to Switzerland and Europe are available today.

The image below is one of the tunnels inside the palace. A blue light reveals a small ice sculpture behind the railing.

Zurich Railway Station

These are images of Zurich railway station. It is a very large train station. The first image is the main hall of the station. The station itself is well organised, evident from the picture and spotlessly clean. At the bottom right hand corner you can see the tables of a cafe. There is some artwork at the top right hand corner, but I cannot guess as to what it is!
