Giraffes in the wild

It's amazing how wild animals merge into the background. Here is a lone giraffe standing in the middle of the African jungle. The colors in the background match his colours! Almost like a comouflage.

Giraffes have very long necks and legs. They do not have many predators, though lions can attack them. Giraffes can live up to 25 years in the wild.

Here are two giraffes foraging amongst the leaves in the African jungle.

You don't usually see giraffes sitting in the jungle. But here is one, relaxing.

They may look very elegant and graceful from afar, but close up giraffes are not exactly cute! This is a close up of the face of a giraffe. A portrait of a giraffe.

Wild Baby Giraffe

Pictures of a wild baby giraffe near the riverside where it has come to drink water. Taken in the Ruaha jungle in Tanzania, Africa.

Black Hippos in the wild

The photographs in this post were taken of hippopotamus in the wild in Ruaha National Park in Tanzania. Hippos are huge animals, and purely herbivorous. Their skin is thick and the Black Hippo as seen in the picture is more common in Africa. They are one of the largest mammals found on land.  The hippopotamus is a semi-aquatic animal.

The hippos are very dangerous and one can watch them only from afar. Being a national park there is no fence to separate them from visitors and one has to be very careful. This is a picture of a black Hippo with an open mouth.

Their black colour enables them to merge into the scene. Here they look like black rocks.

Wild Buffalo in Africa

This photograph of a wild buffalo was taken in the Tanzanian jungle in Africa. In Ruaha National Park. This buffalo may not seem dangerous, but actually it is a very dangerous animal! It was about to charge our jeep.

Tanzania artisans

This photograph was taken near Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. Workers or artisans are busy at work. The craftsmen are making decorative pieces out of ebony and other materials for sale to tourists. The man sitting to the left of the picture has completed a giraffe, which he will probably paint. The man on the right has carved out some figurines.

Colourful Lizards

These pictures are of a type of African lizard called Agamas. They change their colour to improve their social ranking, particularly the males who do it to attract the females.
These lizards of different sizes. They have "well-developed limbs, and many have keeled scales, middorsal crests, and throat flaps or fans".

Wild Zebras in Ruaha National Park Tanzania

Here are some high resolution photographs of zebras in the wild alongwith a sketch of a lone zebra. The photos are fairly good, but even larger versions are available with me. The scenes were shot in Tanzania. The jungle was teeming with wildlife. It was called Ruaha, a Tanzanian national park.

This photo is of a lone zebra standing in a background of sparse foliage in the forest. It seems unafraid of humans. More curious than afraid.

We could go up pretty close to him in the jungle and all he did was stare. Zebras are not cute, but still quite beautiful.

The minute we walked up to them, they turned and stared. All happy, well-fed zebras in the jungle. The thick green foliage offered sufficient food for them.

Here are some zebras alongwith a deer herd, and it looks like the deer and the zebras are good friends.

Nature Scenes from Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania, Africa

Dar-es-Salaam is not the capital of Tanzania, but it is certainly the most beautiful city in the country. Residential areas like those in the Msasani Peninsula are breathtakingly beautiful. The photographs below have been shot from the Oyster Bay area, part of the peninsula. Some of them can be used for header images.

The photo below shows the road leading to Oyster Bay. You can see the houses at the far end of the road.

Tinga Tinga painting from Dar-es-Salaam Tanzania

This is a photograph of a Tingatinga painting I picked up on the streets of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. As Dar is the place where this style of painting orginated, I am sure it is genuine Tingatinga even it is in a way street art and a simple one.

large tingatinga painting

The Tingatinga painting style is named after Edward S. Tingatinga, a Tanzanian. He established this form of art in the sixties. Technically, Tingatinga art is painting on masonite using bicycle paint in bright colours, and traditionally these are supposed to be very large paintings. Nowadays this doesn't hold true, with a lot of miniatures available. The one published here is a fairly large painting around four-five feet in height.

The motifs, patterns and designs are based on East African Swahili culture. This art has influenced modern African art.
