Forbidden City in Beijing, China

These are pictures of the famous tourist attraction in Beijing in China - The Forbidden City, so-called because  "no-one could enter or leave the palace without the emperor's permission". It was  Chinese Imperial Palace for 500 years, from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty and also the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government.Today it contains the Palace Museum.  

It is a World Heritage Site. The style of Architecture is typically Chinese, which is unique to the country and the places it influenced. It is centuries old, as old as the Chinese civilization. 

This photograph is the main entrance of this large museum. Walking through takes hours, minimum half a day. 

The architectural style at the Forbidden City is distinctive. Yellow roof tiles were used as yellow was the Imperial color. Red was used extensively for wooden columns of the buildings, as well as the walls.

Throngs of tourists inside the Forbidden City. An unique aspect of the structures inside the Forbidden City is how well they are maintained. All are freshly painted and preserved very well. They looked brand new! This takes away from the feeling that these buildings are hundreds of years old. What is admirable is that the place is spotlessly clean and very well organised.

The rooms lining this courtyard are filled with precious artefacts from ancient China.

Streets of Beijing with people, traffic, cyclists, pavements and buildings

Here are some good quality photographs of the streets of Beijing with a fair amount of detail which give a feel of the city.

In the first photo you can see a group of cyclists waiting at a traffic signal. To the left of the image there is a police car with two Chinese policemen standing outside it.

The second image is of some people waiting to cross the road. There is a woman with a shopping bag and some young, smart girls. There is a shopping centre in the background and a young couple laughing and talking on the road in front of it. There are also taxis and buses.

This photograph was shot from across a white railing. A lone car can be seen on the broad road and there are some buildings in the background. Some construction work seems to be going on but the ugliness is hidden from view by pretty billboards.

This is a main thoroughfare in Beijing with important buildings and commercial complexes to the left of the picture. Cyclists can be seen on a road with hardly any cars. Cyclists are a common sight in Beijing. A bus can be seen at a bus-stop to the right of the image.

This is a mall in Beijing, the wall of which are adorned with advertisements and cinema posters. Smart young people can be seen on the pavement outside the mall. MacDonalds restaurant is on the ground floor here. The photograph shows a fair amount of clear details.

This is a closer view of the pavement and MacDonalds restaurant in front of the mall in Beijing. Two trash cans can be seen in the picture at the bottom left. Notice the number of young people on the streets. In China most people wear western clothes, whether poor or rich.

In this picture there is a woman on a moped or motorised two-wheeler. One rarely sees mopeds or scooters in Beijing. Other traffic like buses, and four-wheelers can also be seen in the picture.

Here you can see a tree-lined pavement with people walking and some cycles parked at the edge of it. It is a shopping area. On the top of the buildings there are advertisement hoardings or billboards.

Tiananmen Square in China

These are a few photographs of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China. This square is the largest city square in the world, but more important it has a historical significance. Many important events have taken place here as it has been used as a meeting place ever since it was made. At one end of it lies the Forbidden City, the palace of the Emperors of China.

The photo below is a little over exposed, but it's a sharp image. It was clicked with a SLR Canon, not digital.

This monument is a tribute the country's heroes.

The photo below is of a few policemen who appear to be taking photographs of themselves at Tiananmen Square. As this square is usually swarming with police one is not sure whether they were on duty or not.

This last photograph is of Tiananmen Square at night. In the daytime the square is packed with tourists and it's difficult to get a clear photo.

Beijing Photographs and Skyline

These pictures are of Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China. The pictures are of Beijing buildings and skyscrapers against the sky.

Beijing is a clean and organised city with wide walkways, broad roads and state of the art flyovers. There are cycle tracks and bus lanes and the traffic is organised. It is considered the political, educational, and cultural center of China, unlike Shanghai which is the economic capital.
Beijing is beautiful and the only problem is the pollution.

This first photo was taken as we were speeding on a flyover. A manual camera was used for this picture.

This is another shot of the same scene, this time from a digital camera and a different angle.

Another picture of the smart buildings in Beijing city. They look to be in the commercial district of the city.

The photograph below is that of a bridge or flyover in Beijing with buildings as the background. In the foreground you can see a road curving towards the right. The cleanliness of the city is visible.

These are three commercial complexes in Beijing city. Two cranes in the foreground show that construction activity is in full swing. Beijing is relatively a new city, and it is growing.

The image below is Beijing by night. One can say it's the  Beijing skyline. All the rest of the pictures were taken with a Canon digital camera.

The picture below was taken from a flyover, from a taxi. In the background you can see the buildings of Beijing and in the foreground the railings of a bridge. To the extreme left of the picture you can see a part of the Birds Nest, the building that China built for the Olympics. This photograph was taken almost a year before the Beijing Olympics.
