Urban Thane - bird's eye view

Thane lies at the head of the Thane Creek and is surrounded by the hills of Yeoor. Thane Creek runs through the city, which is a stream of water from the Ulhas river and Arabian Sea. The city has around innumerable  lakes. The Upvan Lake is located at the foot-hills of Yeoor hills and a popular recreation place for Thaneites. In the background of this image you can see the Yeoor hills and also Neelkanth Heights, the skyscrapers in the distance at the foot of the hills and Upvan lake. The lake itself is not visible in the photograph which was taken from one of the top floors of an apartment in one of the skyscraper towers of Hiranandani Meadows.

This photograph captures the old and new modern Thane very well. The old in the background at the Yeoor foothills and the brand new skyscrapers now dotting the city.

Mumbai suburban railway station pictures

Here are a few photographs of a typical Mumbai suburban railway station interior and the "local" suburban train or metro.

The first picture gives an overview of a platform with commuters waiting for the local or metro train. On the left of the image you can see commuters climbing up the staircase to the railway bridge and to the right of the image there is the rail track.

Here is a shot of a local suburban train or metro pulling out of the station. You can see part of the platform and vendors selling food right on the edge of it. Some litter can be seen lying on the tracks

The train has now halted on the platform. This shot shows the roof of the train as well as the roof of the two platforms on either side of it.

This is a closer shot of the commuters on the staircase. It can get quite crowded when several trains arrive on the platforms at the same time.

The photo below is the bridge above the platforms. The signs in red and blue notify commuters about the platform numbers and the arriving and departing local trains. School children, college students as well as ordinary people can be seen in the picture.

Mumbai Malls Exteriors

These are pictures of the facades of three Mumbai Malls, two in Mumbai and one just outside Mulund, in Thane.

The first photo is of Phoenix Mills (High Street Phoenix) in Mumbai. It is one of the most successful malls in Mumbai and very large too. It has several storeys of parking, and all major brands including the multiplex PVR have a place inside. This photo is of the gate facing the main road with the signage. The actual buildings inside the mall are spread out and not seen in the picture.

R Mall is located on the outskirts of Mumbai, at the very edge of Mulund, bordering Thane. It is one of the older malls that side of town, and quite successful. Adlabs has a multiplex cinema hall here, with more than six screens. In this photograph you will see a group of young people gathered outside the mall. There are also signboards of Pizza Hut and Big Bazaar on the building exterior.

This picture is of Eternity Mall, a stone's throw away from R Mall, although it falls in Thane. This mall has never really taken off and has a dirty food court. Cinemax has a multiplex here. There are two auto rickshaws in the picture and cinema posters on the wall of the multiplex theater.

Homeless in India - Photographs

Here are some photos showing homelessness in India. Poverty and India are two words which are synonymous for foreigners. While it is true that many Indians are poor, most of them do have a roof above their heads, even if it is a thin tin one. However a certain percentage of the population doesn't even have a tarpaulin over their heads. They are totally homeless and helpless, and often land in this situation as they have left their villages (where they are starving) to try and make ends meet in the city. Accommodation here is beyond their means.

While homelessness is prevalent in all countries of the world, it is more acute in countries like India.

The first photograph is of a poignant image of a toddler playing on the pavement with a baby fast asleep next to her. Household belongings are strewn around and a pole and the wall are used as wardrobes. A dog sleeps next to the playing child. Homeless people often keep stray dogs as pets.

The photograph below is of tents put up on the pavement on a busy highway in Mumbai.

Two women and a girl in their makeshift home on the road. Their clothes are hung in public view.

It's amazing how we pass by the homeless and not blink an eye.

The second picture is taken in Thane, a city near Mumbai, under a flyover.

This last image is taken in Pune city and has migrants from the villages who have come to eke out a living.

Most of the images above were shot in Mumbai and Pune.
