Stinking open drain at Viviana Mall

Maybe this is normal for all parking spaces at public malls, but for me it is a first. An open drain which stinks and if you look closely carries a stagnant sludge of stinky stuff. I do not know if it is legal, but if it is legal, then it shouldn't be as it poses a health hazard. Surely it is a breeding ground for insects like mosquitoes and other insects?

A close look at the grey sludge underneath the grille in the parking lot. I wrote a message to the Viviana Mall on their facebook page and I was told that it would be passed on to the concerned person. That was weeks ago. I really doubt that they will clean up.

Spitting in public places

Spitting is very common in India and is mainly due to people chewing tobacco. Mostly people spit on roads, in lifts, in ditches and in any place they find as long as it is not in their own home.

Spitting out of train and bus windows is very common. But here is a cab driver risking dirtying his own cab by spitting out of the window.

Monkey eating Ice Golas!

The Indian Ice Gola, a type of ice-cream is famous. So popular is it that monkeys too love it! This is a kind of instant ice candy made from crushed ice. You need to add salt and make small ice balls. Pour a sweet and colored flavouring syrup on it and viola! A gola is ready to eat. Golas are typical of India and sold everywhere by vendors, particularly at markets, fairs and tourist places. These photographs are of monkeys eating the golas thrown away by customers.

This monkey is making the most of a brown gola at a tourist spot in Mahabaleshwar.

If one has found a gola, another is not far behind. They are biting hard!

This monkey is worried that the gola is dripping water, and never mind the garbage around! Sadly people discard the food in open garbage bins.

Stray Cattle in India

Stray cattle which seems to belong to nobody is a common sight in India, although not as common as stray dogs.

This photo is taken in Rajasthan, a cow is sunning itself on the road. 

This photo was taken in Mumbai. Cows and stray dogs near garbage dumps is a common sight in Mumbai.

This cow appears to belong to someone, but is still sniffing around the garbage can.

Garbage trucks or dumpers in India

Garbage is collected at different places in the city by these garbage trucks which are usually in deplorable condition. On their way to the dumping ground they often spill garbage which has been collected and its best not to behind this type of vehicle!

These are the new clean-up trucks of the Mumbai Municipial Corporation. Look far better but not enough of them!

Pigs eating garbage

These are photographs of pigs at an unofficial garbage dump. This is not a proper garbage dumb, but the slums around it use it as one. People also use this as a pooping place. What surprised me was that people actually live there, with the garbage dump as their front yard!

Public Toilets in Urban India

India is woefully short of public toilets and these are pictures of the few that are there. Usually prominent places in towns and cities have these public loos. The first two photographs of of public toilets in Mumbai. This one is right next to a garbage dump. Or rather the public has made it a garbage dump.

This one has been beautified a little with plants on the outside. Inside it will probably be stinking.

This toilet on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near the toll booth is built and run by the private contracter who runs the highway.

Another toilet on the Mumbai Pune Expressway at a food mall  has been dubbed a "washroom," American style. Of late India has a fascination for all things American, and the ubiquitous European nomenclature "toilet" is considered infradig and well, too common to use!

Slums next to the Mumbai airport runaway

These are photographs of unauthorised slums adjoining the Mumbai airport runaway. Dangerous for the residents of the huts, and also very noisy. It is dangerous for the aircraft as well because crows tend to collect around the garbage near the slums. Both the photographs were taken from inside the airplane, through the window. In the first picture you can see the wing of the plane which forms the foreground, and the slums the background.

This is a clearer picture of the slums next to the airport runaway.

KFC Garbage

India has overflowing garbage bins in the cities, and multinational companies which follow strict norms of dumping garbage in their home countries, add to the mess here. These photos contain images of trash dumped by the American multinational food outlet called KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) in the Deccan area in Pune. It shows that people behave badly when the regulations are poor. Civic behavior is certainly not inherent in anyone.

Litter and garbage on the rail tracks

Here are pictures of filthy railway tracks in India. People use the toilet at railway stations and also throw garbage outside the train window and railway platforms. Railway personnel are also guilty of this at times.

This photo is taken at Mumbai Central Station, just before the train arrived. There is slime and muck here besides litter like empty cartons and paper waste.

This pic is taken at a suburban railway station. The railway track is full of litter. Waste paper and plastic.

The following photo was posted later, and taken in July 2015, near V.T. station. It does appear as if commuters dirtying the tracks is not enough. Households next to the railway lines used the tracks as a garbage dump!

Garbage on the roads in India

Seeing garbage on Indian streets is fairly common. People often throw garbage outside the bin, not inside it. This is either because the garbage bin is overflowing or because of carelessness.

This photograph is taken in Pune. You can see the garbage lying on the road although the yellow garbage can is empty.

This photograph is taken in Mumbai. There is no garbage bin in sight but people are using the side of the road as a garbage bin. Stray dogs and cows, crows and rodents frequent such places. Food and medicate waste are all to be seen here. The girl in the red nightie, a slum-dweller, has arrived with some rubbish to throw.

In this photo from Pune litter can be seen all over the place, quite a distance from the garbage bin. Garbage has spread to the empty plot behind the fence.

Here is a picture of garbage lying near an office building, partly on the pavement and partly on the road.

Water Pipeline in India

Water pipelines in urban areas in India are often encroached upon by slums. If there is a leakage it can result in contamination of water.

This photo is of a part of the large pipe which carries water to the city. Here the pipeline itself does not have slums on it, but around it. In the middle of the pipelines there is litter and garbage.

Pigs are feeding on the garbage inbetween the water pipelines. These pigs are not strays, but belong to the slum-dwellers. To the right of the picture you can see a hut which is touching the pipeline and children playing on it. A boy in a red shirt is running after the pigs in the garbage.

The water pipeline looks different in serene surroundings. This particular pipeline is on the Mumbai-Pune highway.

People peeing and shitting on the streets in India

Relieving oneself or pooping in public is a common street practice in India. These are some pictures of people doing it in and around Mumbai.

The adult in the picture does not care that the road is busy. He is too busy to  take his rickshaw and find a public loo.

This man probably thinks that there is nothing wrong pissing on the garbage dump, or perhaps into the pond. He has a cycle (seen in the right of the pic) which he can use to find a public loo, if he wants to.

Usually number two is done early in the morning, but at times one finds them at it even on a sunny day. The man in the foreground has done his job and is going back home.  The boy in the background is sitting peacefully, drawing in the mud. A small bucket of water is next to him. Their shanties can be seen to the left of the picture.

Children playing without toys

Children can play without toys because they have an imagination. These are some photographs shot of little children making do with whatever little they had.

In the first photo, taken in South Mumbai, these small boy is fiddling with a plastic container which holds razor blades. Even though I was standing right before him he was oblivious to my presence, so absorbed was he in what he was doing. No jigsaw puzzles for him!

The photograph below was taken in a small village near Mumbai. This group of children is sitting on the dry grass, playing with sticks. Certainly better than toy guns!

This little boy, photographed in Mumbai, has found something in a pile of mud and garbage he is fascinated by.  His sister looks on.

The little boy and girls below have nothing to play with except themselves and a small balloon. They are sitting on a hand-cart on the streets of Ahmedabad.
