Microbrewery in Pune and Bangalore

These are pictures of the equipment or machinery that is found in a microbrewery. A microbrewery is a brewery which produces limited amounts of beer on a small scale. These photos are of large cylindrical machines that make beer. Strictly speaking these are brew pubs because when a brewery functions as a beer pub or beer bar then it's called a brewpub. The term microbrewery is used when beer is distributed beyond the four walls of the brewery. In this case the brew is not distributed outside, even in small quantities and therefore the term brewpub is more appropriate.

The advantage of freshly brewed beer is well, it's fresh, without additives, and has delicious flavors.

This brewpub image is that of a place called Toit on 100 ft road in Indira Nagar, Bangalore. The beer is brewed in smart steel shiny cylinders inside the pub. These beer making machines or beer making equipment looks very well maintained.

Cycle carts with three wheels

Cycle carts to carry goods are used frequently in towns and cities of India. These three-wheeled carts have a cycle attached which makes it easy to maintain and inexpensive to run. They have a small load carrying capacity. However these vehicles are used in fairly innovative ways as the first picture demonstrates.

This man is smoking a bidi as he rides his cycle cart on a cold morning near Jaipur, in Rajasthan. Believe it or not this small cyclecart is carrying long flexible pipes which are potruding for several feet, if not meters, outside his vehicle. This would be considered a dangerous vehicle on the roads of any developed country but for India, this is common. The traffic police would not bother to penalize this driver who is trying to earn a living.

This is a smaller cycle cart which is being used to a large wicker basket full of vegetables. Some vegetable vendors carry this on their heads and a lucky few have a vehicle to cart it around in. This photograph was shot in Kolkata.

Carvings of the Aurangabad Caves

The elaborate and intricate carvings on the walls and temples of the Aurangabad caves is worth seeing and not just because it is more than 14 centuries old! These carvings are to be found in the 12 artificial rock-cut Buddhist cave shrines which are located on top of a hill near Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
These carvings are a spectacular representation of Indian Classical Art.

The figure, possibly of Buddha with two female attendants or consorts. All around the figures which have been carved into the soft rock you can see flowery designs and pretty borders.

Stark barren desolate scene

This black and white image of a harsh landscape gives a sense of loneliness and desolation, a sense of grief and abandonment. The starkness is brought out by the dark sky in the background and the barren lifeless trees in the foreground. The rapidly drying up water source reminds us that life is dying. The reflection of the trees and the sky in the water is stronger than the actual trees and the sky, signifying that all that is life is its shadow.

The same image has been given an effect by using an orange glow, giving an impression of a forest fire.

Another images depicting graphically a forest fire. The bleakness of the scene shows how inhospitable the land is now, and it is as if setting it on fire is the only answer.

Old ledgers, files and papers

Yes, this style of record keeping is existent in India! Computers may or may not be present in some offices, but they will not always keep old records. The records are not fed into computers and therefore the old ledgers and files are the only way to access old records.

These are photographs of old ledgers and stacks of papers which are usually found in government and also at times private offices in India. Computerisation is not always the preferred or affordable method.

old ledger books

Here is heap of old files and papers. They can be a fire hazard. Many government offices also have these type of files and papers. Imagine if one has to find a paper in this heap! Only a person working here for a long time will be able to locate it. If you are from the younger generation finding something in these papers is like finding a needle in a haystack. Or not, perhaps we can say that finding a paper in a paperstack is worse than finding a needle in a haystack.

Koh Samui Outdoor Airport

Koh Samui airport in Thailand is one of the most beautiful airports I have ever been to. Koh Samui is an island off the coast of Thailand and popular with tourists. One of the reasons for the uniqueness of the airport is that it is an open air airport or outdoor airport. There must be other outdoor airports in the world, but I have only seen this one.

Here is the "inside" of the airport. Sweepers are cleaning the area and in the distance you can see passengers walking towards the gates of the airport. A signboard to the right of the picture points in that direction.

A closer look at the passengers/travelers with suitcases.

Another view of the road leading to the gates. Sun and rain umbrellas help protect passengers from the rain, which in fact is quite common on this pretty tourist island. The sides of the road is decorated with plants, trees and pots and wooden benches are available for seating. Everything is sparkling clean despite the airport being outdoors.
outdoor airport in Thailand

This is the main building of the airport and it does not have walls. It has used natural materials to build the roof, cane and wood. Even this area does not have walls, just a roof to keep out the natural elements like the sun and rain. A bookshop and other shops and kiosks can be seen in the picture and a coffee shop in the middle of the picture in the distance.

Sistine Chapel Corridor Ceiling Paintings and Designs

The Sistine Chapel's (where the Pope resides), is famous for its architecture and sculpted decorations and paintings. Renaissance artists including Michelangelo, Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Pinturicchio worked on the paintings and frescoes in the chapel and the results as you can see in these pictures, are spectacular.

The golden ceiling fresco at the Sistine Chapel. This painted architecture as visible in these pictures is full of religious symbols like the acorn, fish, and falcons.

Not just gold, but also red and blue are used extensively in these remarkable art works. All the paintings have elaborately decorated borders. The paintings here contain figures of angels alongwith various other symbols used to convey some meaning.

Another photograph of the paintings lining the celing at the Sistine Chapel in Rome. The painted architecture not only comprises of various symbols depicting Christianity and the story of Jesus Christ, but also pictures of angels, trumpets and other figures.

At the end of the magnificent corridor you can see a sculpture of two figures standing alongside the symbol of of what looks like a small dragon. These paintings are a showcase of the reproduction of the anatomy and the contours of the human form.

These pale and pastel raised paintings or designs on the ceiling also appear to depict some story from the bible. There is no doubt that all this work is telling a story and is mean to be interpreted and read.

Sistine Chapel Ceiling designs

The Sistine Chapel is where the Pope lives, the head of the Catholic Church. It lies in the Vatican City. It's painted architecture and sculpted decorations, frescoes and paintings are famous throughout the world. Renaissance artists like Michelangelo, Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Pinturicchio worked on the paintings and frescoes in the chapel, creating great works of art.

This is an image of the spectacular ceiling of one of the corridors inside the church. Most of these paintings depict the life of Jesus Christ and Moses and are meant to be interpreted and read.  Symbolism was used freely.
