Construction site silhouettes

These are silhouettes of buildings under construction. Men with helmets and jackets and iron rods sticking out of half made buildings.

Crowds in India

India is the second most populated country in the world, and fast catching up with China. That is perhaps one of the reasons why crowds are seen frequently in India. It doesn't take much to collect a crowd, be it a gathering, a protest, a procession, a celebration, or simply people gawking. In fact, celebrating festivals or private functions in public has become the norm.

Here is a crowd of women at a railway station. They have gathered here for a purpose.

Rows of people on a Mumbai street. Green banners in Urdu could mean that this procession has a religious meaning regarding Islam for example during a religious festival. At least they are not blocking the road.

This photograph depicts a marketplace in an Indian village. People are yet to gather in large crowds. By midday it will be difficult to walk through the crowds.

Hoardings encouraging speed

India has the dubious distinction of the maximum road accidents or traffic collisions in the world. A National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report statistics revealed that annually more than 140,000 deaths from road accidents occur in India - these are 2012 figures.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that the major cause of traffic collisions is speeding. However, there is no ban on irresponsible advertising encouraging recklessness.

irresponsible and bad hoarding

At least the Tatas are responsible. I had complained about this hoarding to Ratan Tata and the hoarding was immediately removed. Usually the advertising agencies alongwith ignorant advertising managers in companies create such advertisements.

Cronut craze

It's the new craze in western countries, this sinful dessert which is a combination of a doughnut and croissant. It's deep fried like a doughnut but the ring shaped dough also has layers. And layers mean more fat which is placed between the layers! These are medium sized cronuts from Theos, a bakery in South Mumbai. Must be at least 350 calories each although one cannot be sure how much fat is actually used inbetween the layers. A plain doughnut is usually around 200 calories for a medium sized one.

A cronut is one of the worst high calories culprits. Pure junk. While sugar, white flour in abundance plus far too much fat. Mostly refined oil used for frying. Theos says they use butter for the dough not margarine, but most bakeries used margarine in their bakery products and margarine contains the dangerous transfats. It's a hydrogenated fat and bakery products found in supermarkets in India all contain this. Causes the arteries to clog. Best make your favorites at home, using butter.

Is Nirmal Lifestyle Mall dying?

Nirmal Lifestyle on a saturday night. Deserted from the looks of it. There was a time when one had to jostle through crowds. Now only CCD, a coffee shop, is doing well there. Many brands have shut shop. PVR has cut its ticket prices in half to survive. Most restaurants have fled. Not surprising. The poor hygeine at the mall even when it just opened, and the filthy toilets were the worst thing about the mall. Garbage and debris used to lie around. Security people were rude. You couldn't even take a family picture here without them trying to snatch your camera! It was ridiculous.

Another bad thing was that the best thing about the mall used to be the open spaces which were taken away by advertisers. Indoor games like cricket and sports ruined the atmosphere of the mall. Who wants to go to a mall where one can barely walk? Today its so deserted that its scary!

Crossword, a store which used to be so packed that there was barely enough room to stand, has closed down.

Closed Bookstore Crossword

A string of shops shut down. First it was Mocha and then followed by other restaurants. Today, even Rajdhani is gone. And this was a place where people would line up to eat from.

Shops shut down

A picture from Nirmal Lifestyle's hey day. The promotions were on every week-end. The crowds made it impossible to get to the shops. The brand promotions used to occupy a lot of space. Worst culprits were the toy cars running around in the middle of the mall and a cricket pitch erected in the middle of the mall. Ruined the looks and feel of the mall. No wonder competition from Korum and now Viviana was the death knell of this mall.
